Thank you to everybody who has made work or come to view work here at 25sg during the last nine months. We sure couldn’t have had such a good year without all of you…

We would like to invite you for an afternoon of performance, food, wine and discussions, to celebrate the events of 2011 and to say goodbye until March 2012. You are welcome to invite anybody else who you think might like to join us, to introduce them to 25sg and to give them a small glimpse of what happens here.

We hope to be able to continue putting on quality work by local, national and international artists at all stages of their practice throughout 2012. We respond mainly to artists in love with live art, which includes video and bodywork. We are also open to ideas that might show us new ways to reach audiences and to share our love of art and community.

Nicola Canavan

Nicola Canavan, Bittersweet, 2010, Credits: Fiona Nicholl

Nicola Canavan creates contemplative work spanning performance, installation and photography. With her work, audiences can explore the feminine body, the political body and the spiritual body which are interwoven in personal experience and desire. Canavan acknowledges and resists the sacred and divine by entering the flesh and installing symbol through the modification and manipulation of her body, she searches for ‘Self’ through abstraction and ritual to create a domain which is immeasurable without the consensus of an audience.

Born in South Shields (North East England), Nicola has been performing and showing work nationally and internationally since graduating with a BA in Fine Art from Northumbria University in 2006. In the same year she met Kris Canavan, now husband, and has since been creating a series of collaborations which test the constraints and boundaries of their intimate relationship.

Kris Canavan

Kris Canavan was born in N. Ireland in 1980, since 2001 he has been making performance work that centres on the themes of mythology, unity, tragedy & romance.

In 2004 he graduated from The University of the West of England, Bristol.

His artworks and performances have been presented at galleries, museums, festivals, clubs and other venues including The National Review of Live Art, Bodily Functions Festival, Frankfurt Art Fair, & Palazzo Delle Papesse. His work has been published in magazines and Journals including Art Review, Dance and Theatre Journal, ABOBA and publications including Manuel Vason’s ‘Encounters’.

In 2006 he met and started collaborating with his (future) wife Nicola Canavan under the banner Anatomy_Of. They have performed across the U.K and Europe at festivals and galleries including Momentum, Bodily Functions and Platform North East. In December 2008 Nicola gave birth to their son Maxim William Canavan.

Since October 2010 he has been an AMINO Associate Artist & is currently developing new work with their support…

We are sorry to announce that due to unforeseen circumstances Nicola Singh’s residency has been postponed. The event programmed for Saturday 6th August has been cancelled until further notice.

Nicola Singh is an artist/curator currently based at NewBridge Studios, Newcastle upon Tyne. Nicola’s practice integrates live performance, visual art and contemporary music composition through process-led physical and intellectual enquiry. Her practice questions our understanding of the ways in which we interact with, create and are affected by sound. Nicola is also associate director of Tender Buttons.

Andrzej Wojtas and Ewelina Aleksandrowicz are UK based artists who are working within the area of digital media – video, DIY electronics, physical computing and AV performance. Their practice involves a wide range of interdisciplinary activities from video art and short forms to circuit bending, and wearable technologies.

Ella Golt, I Command the Space, 2009

Born in London where she currently lives and works, Ella graduated from The University of East London, BA Fine Art in 2006 and from the Slade School of Art, MFA Sculpture, in 2009. Ella is a longstanding member of Albert & Friends Instant Circus.

Ella Golt will be in residence at 25 Stratford Grove from Monday 20th – Saturday 25th June.

You are invited to 25sg to view an exhibition produced in collaboration with pupils from Hotspur Primary School and artist Thomas Whittle. The exhibition marks the launch of a special limited edition, Colour this Book, the first children’s publication by Thomas Whittle and produced with the pupils from the school.

Thomas Whittle led a series of exciting drawing and colouring workshops with a hundred and thirty-one children at Hotspur Primary School to produce imaginative illustrations for a unique book inspired by birds. This new endeavour began with a visit to the school from Wych Elm Falconry where the children met Fain the Raven, Torr the Harris Hawk and Duma the Eagle Owl and created drawings of the birds. In subsequent workshops, Whittle and the children have transformed their artwork into colourful imagery in Colour this Book to be presented in the exhibition at 25sg on Monday 27 June – Wednesday 29 June 2011. While Whittle’s work is known for its naïve and child like, investigative approach, in Colour this Book, he combines his fascination with children’s drawings and his passion for colour.

This is a must-have publication for art lovers, adults and children alike. Colour this Book will be on sale for a special price at the exhibition and book launch at 25sg on Monday 27 June, 4-8pm. Etienne Robertson, La Minerve, 1803

Isabella Streffen works in photography, film & video, writing and interstitial media to interrogate questions of perception, looking and desiring, often using low-tech instruments to challenge orthodox wisdom and explore the fundamental problems of vision.

Isabella’s current research examines the use of technologies developed for military vision, their use in art practice, and the impact on questions of subjectivity. She has a particular interest in the Space Race and the forgotten narratives of the Cold War.
